Chakki Atta: Why is it important?

It’s survival, it’s a human need. And when it comes to staple foods, atta (wheat flour) tops the list. Whether it’s a chef or a home cook, atta is an essential when it comes to the household. Now when it comes to wheat flour, the process is simple - grind the whole wheat grain into a fine structure. However, that’s not it. 


Chakki atta is not just a process, but rather a tradition when it comes to India and the deeply-rooted culture. Chakki is a traditional hand stone mill comprising of a pair of two flat stones which are used for grinding grains. The pair of stones is connected with a rod that is used to grind. 


Now, what makes chakki atta so special?


Simple. That is it. It is simpe, yet authentic. When you look at it, it is just two stones putting on a culinary show. Chakki in itself is a tradition deep rooted in the Indian culture. It not only stores the nutritional benefits of wheat flour, but also exhibits ancestral wisdom. That is not it, however. Chakki atta is not just the food, it is an emotion altogether. 


Whether it is the fluffy rotis or the kada prasad, chakki atta is the only way to make them. The traditional grinding process of a chakki ensures that nothing is lost - it retains the essentials of the wheat kernel, ensuring a vitamins, minerals and dietary fiber.


What are the benefits of chakki atta?

Chakki atta is also packed with B vitamins, magnesium, iron and phosphorus - all good things for the human body. Chaki atta in the diet is a rich source of nutrients, ensuring a wholesome diet intake.

Now, of course there are rotis and parathas and the famous kada prasad, but here are a few other things that can be cooked with wheat flour:


  1. Atta ladoo - with a recipe like besan ladoo, this sweet dish is high in fiber and a must in winters.

  2. Atta pancakes - pancakes, but make it healthy! Follow the recipe that is similar to your regular pancakes for a dish that is both tasty and healthy.

  3. Khakhra - the favourite all-time gujarati snack! A healthy treat that is crispy, crunchy and everyone’s go-to!

  4. Sukhdi - A staple sweet that is used as prasad, it is filled with ghee and chakki atta, making it a treat for winters. 

  5. Dal baati - The famous bati that has made into everyone’s favourite food list is made with atta flour and baked to perfection for the perfect taste!


Conclusion


Chakki atta is not just atta, it is nutrition filled wheat flour that is made traditionally by using a manual chakki (stone mill). Make fluffy rotis, ladoos, pancakes, kada prasad, sukhdi, dal baati and many more -  ensuring nourishment to the body.
